Sharjah rightfully bears the status of the cultural capital of the country. Unique museums, galleries and theaters give it special popularity, not to mention the modern architecture and the traditional oriental souq market, where you can spend hours wandering from stall to stall in search of an original souvenir. This emirate borders Dubai, but life and hotels here are much cheaper. I really fell in love with Sharjah and its attractions, and I will introduce you to the most interesting of them.

City architecture

Sharjah looks very attractive, in my opinion, due to its modern architecture. In this city, popular among tourists from all over the world, one of the most beautiful high-rise buildings stands out - a building located on the shore of the Khalid Lagoon. It is a real decoration of the city landscape thanks to its balconies with an unusual round shape. The high-rise complex combines a residential complex with an entertainment complex, including the famous Grand Buhairah cinema.

Sharjah Al Khish Fort

Among the many modern buildings, I found it in the city center Sharjah Al Khish Fort, which stands out for its ancient architecture. The construction of the two-story fortification was based on stones, corals and adobe. In 1820, the then ruler Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al-Kazimi erected the original structure, but the fortification was partially dismantled in the early 1970s. Only a single tower testifies to its former greatness, which gave the name to the square on which the Al-Burj fort is located, which means “tower” in Arabic.

What makes the city especially popular is Sharjah Al Markazi Blue Market, which was also called the Central Market and the Gold Market. I was very struck by this building: the main part of the building is really painted yellowish and in the rays of the sun it looks as if it were covered with gold. The round mosaics on both sides of the central entrance, made in the traditional Islamic blue color, added their own zest to the building’s façade. The two wings of the market are connected by pedestrian bridges. One part of the building will delight you with antiques, carpets, gifts and electronics, the other with gold, precious stones and jewelry. And all this in 600 stores.

Behind the market visited Art Museum, founded in 1995, with 68 showrooms. I really liked each of the eight collections personally assembled by Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi. Almost all items in the collection date back to the 18th century and are presented in the form of paintings of the Arab East, which were painted by European Orientalists. As it turned out, I visited a museum that is considered one of the largest art galleries in the Middle East.

Maritime Museum

The Sharjah Maritime Museum, opened in 2009 with the participation of the ruling Sheikh Sultan Ali Qasimi, is located in the Khan district. Interesting exhibits are collected here that clearly demonstrate how great the importance of the sea was at all times in the life of the Emirates.

The museum's collection includes wooden sailing ships that the Arabs used for fishing, trading, and collecting pearls. The exhibition displays unique antique tools of shipbuilders, diving devices for pearl divers, as well as rare specimens of pearls. In the halls of the museum you can see portraits of outstanding navigators and captains of different years. In addition, visitors are invited to watch a performance with the participation of sailors and listen to ancient songs on a maritime theme.

The Church of the Apostle Philip in Sharjah was built in August 2011 and is considered a Russian Orthodox church in the Arabian Peninsula. Its construction took place with donations from parishioners and just ordinary people who love the church. The designer of the church was Yuri Vasilievich Kirs.

A Russian cultural and educational center was located in the temple; a Sunday school for children was opened there, where they taught about the laws of God. The teaching was carried out for both toddlers and middle and older children.
