Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands. Guide to las palmas de gran canaria Las palmas spain

From Las Palmas, our two-week cruise around the Canary Islands began. From the airport to the San Telmo area, where our Hotel Parque was located, we took bus number 60. The ticket price is 2.95 euros per person. On the way 15 minutes. The same bus goes further - to the port in the Santa Catalina area. From the hotel then we went not on this bus, but on a simple bus number 12. The fare costs 1.40 euros per person, the journey takes 6 minutes.

The Hotel Parque cost 71 euros per night with breakfast, they also ordered dinner for 10 euros per person. Dinner is very simple, but hearty, and for such a price, we are unlikely to have eaten somewhere in the city. Dinner included: broccoli soup or appetizer - spinach sticks, 1 main course: a choice of three dishes (fish, chicken in curry sauce, mushroom risotto), 1 dessert: a choice of 4 types (yogurt, ice cream, pudding, fruits), also included 1 soft drink and coffee/tea.

The hotel is located in the San Telmo area, it is almost in the old part of the city - 10 minutes walk to the Cathedral. A bus station is located 100 meters from the hotel: it is convenient to arrive from the airport and then go to the port. The room is spacious, large bathroom. Free wi-fi. Not far from the hotel, just 5 minutes away is a large supermarket.

Minus: the beds are moving apart, because the floor is tiled. And poor soundproofing. When in the morning the cleaner in the hallway started making noises, it was already difficult to sleep.

We were at the hotel around 5 pm and dinner started at 8. We decided to take a walk before dinner. First we went to the supermarket. There they stocked up with a local Canarian liqueur - honey rum: Ronmiel. Then we walked a little along the pedestrian street Triana (Calle Triana).

It was already getting dark, and we turned back to the hotel. Yes, and fatigue from an early rise plus a long flight affected our bodies. We decided to walk around the city in the morning.

We reached the Cathedral of St. Anna (Catedral de Santa Ana). Opposite the cathedral there are bronze sculptures of dogs, after which the Canary Islands got their name. As you know, the Spanish name of the islands - Las Islas Canarias comes from the Latin Canariae Insulae, which literally means "Isles of Dogs".

From the City Hall (Casas Consistoriales de Las Palmas de G.C) we went to the tiny Plaza del Espiritu Santo, on which an old fountain is installed. The style of architecture is slightly oriental - there are balconies everywhere.

We reached the end of the street. Here was a view of the city. The houses seem to be climbing the hillside. Multi-colored houses look like a Lego constructor. They didn't go upstairs, they turned back.

Christopher Columbus House. It was here that Christopher Columbus himself repeatedly stopped - he spent time here, waiting for his ships to be repaired. The building itself was rebuilt in the middle of the 18th century. Since 1952, the building has been a museum dedicated to the great geographical discoveries and famous sailors of the past.

From the old part of the city we headed towards the hotel past Plaza Hurtado de Mendoza. We went to the pedestrian street Triana. On Sunday morning it was almost deserted. Here is a different style of architecture. The park after which our hotel is named.

We took our things and went by bus number 12 to the port, after 6 minutes we were there.

After lunch and putting things in the cabin, we went to a nearby shopping center. I needed to buy some cosmetics. An interesting situation happened in a cosmetics store. The sales girl did not know at all where among all the types and colors to look for the cosmetics I needed. And I myself showed her what I needed. My husband laughed and said that if we move to the Canary Islands, then there will already be work for me.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria- the largest city of the island of Gran Canaria, and of the entire Canary archipelago. It is located in the eastern part of the north coast. The city was founded by the Spaniards in 1478, and 15 years later, on the way of his first journey, Christopher Columbus made a stop here. Now Las Palmas is a noisy multinational city, because since ancient times, sailors from all over the world have come to its port. The city is full of hotels, shops and restaurants, in addition, it is considered the center of the nightlife of the island.

The main attractions are located in the historical quarter of Vegeta, which was included in UNESCO World Heritage List for the great abundance of buildings from the colonial era preserved there. Except historical monuments, Vegeta is main street expensive restaurants and bars.

Anne's Square is dominated by the 16th century Cathedral, which was built to commemorate the Spanish victory over the Dutch who were trying to take over the islands. The cathedral is visible from almost every corner of the city. The interior of the cathedral is made in the Atlantic Gothic style. Here you can see the paintings of the most famous artist canary islands 18th century Juan de Miranda. In 1894, Pope Leo XIII granted the cathedral the status of a minor basilica. Currently, Santa Ana is the largest religious building in the archipelago. Under him, the Diocesan Museum was created.

There is a museum near the cathedral. Casa de Colón consisting of several buildings. One of the buildings of the end of the 15th century in memory of the landing of Christopher Columbus in these places is called the "Columbus House". Here, in the governor's house, Columbus stopped during his first trip in 1492.

Since 1952, a museum has been opened in it, where both authentic items and reconstructions related to the famous voyages of seafarers are exhibited. The museum is divided into 5 sections:

  • Pre-Columbian America,
  • Columbus and his campaigns
  • Canary Islands and the discovery of America,
  • History and development of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria,
  • Painting of the 16th - 20th centuries.

Opposite the museum stands the Church of Iglesia de San Antonio Abad, where, according to legend, Christopher Columbus prayed before sailing to the New World.

Church of San Antonio Abad was built about three hundred years ago by a talented Italian architect. The facade is decorated with beautiful pilasters, which were installed on a granite pedestal. Inside, you can admire the frescoes by famous artists, the colors of which, it seems, have not even faded since those times. Francisco Goya, who painted these walls, used bright catchy colors and achieved a certain festive atmosphere inside the temple. In front of the altar of the church is the tomb of a brilliant artist, whose remains were transported to Madrid at the beginning of the last century. There is a very beautiful local tradition here: On June 13, young people come here and pray for love.

In addition, next to cathedral you can find the main museum of the Canary Islands - Museo Canario. It contains cultural objects of the indigenous population of the Guanache archipelago, giving an idea of the pre-colonial history of the islands, and the world's largest collection of Cro-Magnon skulls. The museum has a rich library, including newspapers and archival materials dedicated to the Canary Islands. In addition, the museum offers its services to researchers, students and all interested public.

The main city museum of modern art located nearby is also interesting - Centro Atlantico de Arte Moderno (CAAM). The Atlantic Center for Contemporary Art is housed in an 18th-century building and displays works by local and foreign artists and sculptors from the 20th century.

A little north of the Vegeta region extends another region - Triana, which leads to the city port. Historic District Triana is known for its shopping centers and nightclubs. There are plenty of outlet retail outlets here, from tiny old-fashioned shops to big chain stores and upmarket high-end boutiques. Unlike the Vegeta quarter, with its narrow streets and old buildings, where we can be transported back to the Middle Ages, Triana is a much more bourgeois area, where mainly merchant families settled - both local and Andalusian, English, Maltese and Danish.

In the south of Triana, almost opposite the Mercado de Vegueta market, you will see a theater Perez Galdos, named after one of the most famous Spanish writers. This is an important architectural monument in Las Palmas, and after a comprehensive renovation completed in 2007, it has become one of the most modern theaters in Spain.

Continuing your way north of Triana you can find San Telmo city park.

Acquaintance with him is difficult to avoid, because it is here that the main underground bus station, as well as the largest taxi rank. The park is of historical importance, because it was here that main port cities. Until the 19th century, the northern defensive wall stood here, from the presence of which the castle has survived to our time. Castillo de Mata.

Also, there is a small chapel in the park. Hermita de San Telmo, made in the late baroque style and dedicated to sailors and fishermen. Nearby is the headquarters of the Armed Forces (Gobierno-Military), from which, in 1936, the rebellious General Franco began civil war in Spain, as evidenced by the memorial plaque installed here

In the northern part of Las Palmas, several beaches stretch along the coast. The most popular and cleanest beach in the city is the beach Las Canteras, it is located on the western side of the narrow isthmus leading to the peninsula of La Isleta. The length of the beach is 3 km. The coast is protected by a reef, so the waters are calm. At the northern end of the beach is a place Confital, where the wave is constantly observed, so you can surf here. The waves in Confital are considered among the best in Europe for surfing. On the other side of the isthmus near the city port there is a kilometer-long beach Playa Las Alcaravaneras. The port protects this part of the coast from waves, so the waters here are also calm. Near the beach there are many yacht clubs offering yachts for rent.

In Las Palmas there are many interesting places for diving. This is an underwater cave. La Catedral 45 m long; reef protecting the beach Las Canteras(located at a depth of 8 m); and wrecks patrolled by flocks of barracudas: Calais, Frigorifica, Arona and Tres Barcos, which can be explored from the inside.

At the southern outskirts of Las Palmas, on the coast, a quiet fishing village San Cristobal. Local restaurants serve the best seafood in town. In addition, here you can look at the ancient fort, built on the coast. Near the village stretches a beach of black volcanic sand La Laja.

From Las Palmas, you can go further south along the east coast of Gran Canaria: to the ancient towns of Telde, Ingenio and Aguimes, where colonial buildings stand on narrow cobbled streets; cave complexes, where in ancient times the Guanache tribes lived; the city of Arinaga (Arinaga) and the coast of Playa del Carbon (Playa del Carbon), where the Marine Reserve of the same name is located.

There are also excursions from Las Palmas to highest points islands located in its center: volcanic peak Pico de las Nieves (1949 m) and Mount Roque Nublo (1813 m), on top of which rises a huge stone monolith; the largest volcanic crater of the island - Bandama; and to west coast island, famous for its landscapes, and archaeological complexes near the city of Galdar (Galdar).

History of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

There is evidence that a convenient local harbor was also known to the best navigators of antiquity - the Phoenicians, and later the Carthaginians and Moors came here. Modern history the city begins in 1478, after the final victory of the Spaniards over the natives of the archipelago - the Guanches. The settlement appeared a little away from the coast, on the site of the oldest district of the city - Vegeta.

In the ⅩⅤⅼ century, the Canary Islands were not spared from the raids of English pirates, moreover, Holland had views on them. However, the city always managed to survive, and the decisive battle took place off the coast of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1599, and ended with the complete defeat of the Dutch troops.

But no matter how good the climate and convenient harbor, the rapid development of the economy did not begin until the ⅩⅼⅩ century, thanks to the enterprise of a certain Sir A. L. Jones, who founded a Coal Company in the city. The new port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria stopped ships on transatlantic routes. From the historic quarter of Vegeta to the coast stretched streets. And in 1927, the city became the capital of the Eastern Province of the Canary Islands, uniting Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

In the second half of the ⅩⅩ c. the city entered, as they say in such cases, at the time of its heyday. And not only thanks to tourism, which launched a vigorous activity on the island. The local port is one of the largest in the world. It is attractive for business, a significant part of its population is made up of immigrants from all over the world.

Now it's beautiful and modern city, not a single tourist will be dissatisfied with him: no matter what ideas he has about a successful vacation and no matter what time of the year he arrives.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria hosts many festivals, especially in winter. The most famous is held in February, and in terms of scope and pomp, it is second only to the No. 1 carnival in Rio de Janeiro.

Good afternoon.

Island capital Las Palmas de Gran Canary I, with a population of just over 300,000 people.

The town is very cozy, colorful and has its own history. A city in which you fall in love from the first time and for life.

The city, like the island itself, is ideal for relaxation. Couples with children, groups of tourists, just couples in love will find something to do and what to visit!

1. Of course beaches. There are different, for every taste and color and for any type of holiday! But my 2 favorite beaches are (in the city of Las Palmas) and in the south of the island.

This is the treasure of the island. The sandy shore is several kilometers long, cozy, clean beach. Despite the fact that it is located in the city and the windows of houses and hotels overlook the beach, as well as a huge number of cafes, restaurants and bars located on the alleys in front of the beach, people who sit or eat or just walk, all this does not interfere. Being on the beach you enjoy the sea, sand and sun. If you want to eat and drink, please, everything is nearby, at your side!

Also this beach has one feature. Nature itself has created a barrier of stones in the water, which turns the initial part of the sea into a natural pool and protects from the tide. The locals call this chain of stones La Barra(Bar counter)! The water is always clean and calm, where many fish swim. And what I like about this beach is that it is different every day! The water changes color like a chameleon! An unforgettable sight

Anfi(Anfi Beach) , the so-called beach, which is located in the south of the island. This is typical tourist place where the sea, rest, beach, hotels. This beach, but it's kind of unreal. He himself is small, semicircular, the sand is white, the water is turquoise. The beach is fenced and the water is clean and calm. You can sunbathe on sun loungers (but you have to pay), or you can do it on the sand, spread a towel and get high!!! Unreal a nice place!

2. City of Las Palmas. Which is very beautiful and it has both old and new. There are skyscrapers, but they do not interfere, everything is in its place.

The city has a port that fits in very harmoniously and all these cranes, ships, liners do not spoil the landscape.

Must visit Old city This Vegueta, on which the magnificent Cathedral of St. Anne is located.

A very beautiful place. In front of the cathedral there is a huge square with beautiful sculptures of dogs.

Also not far from the Cathedral is the Columbus Museum. I recommend to visit

And just walking around is just nice. There are many unusual corners, houses with old balconies, huge wooden doors, fountains.

You also need to walk around Triana, this is a street blocked for pedestrians, on which shops are located.

I can’t say that the city is green, but there are parks that are looked after and are very beautiful. One of these parks El Parque Doramas. Well-groomed, green, fountains and huge fish swim in the pond.

3. Food. You can talk a lot about Canarian food, but it's better to try everything. As the Canaries themselves say, their food is not Spanish, but Canarian.

Very tasty fish, different and big and small, but everything is very tasty.

I really liked the green peppers, which are fried in oil and sprinkled with sea salt. They are not spicy, but very tasty.

Also in the Canary Islands they prepare a sauce called "moho", red and green are served with potatoes

Avocados grow in the Canary Islands and every restaurant serves avocado salad... Mmmm

I fell in love with the island itself. This is such a mini world where there is a forest and a beach, mountains and dunes. If you are tired of the beach and the sun, go to the mountains, enjoy the forest and silence. I do not have enough words and time to describe everything in detail. I'll just show you the places that won me over

* Forests that are somehow different, beautiful and mountains

* Artenara, a small village whose houses are built in the rocks. And in one rock is a sculpture of the Virgin Mary, who grants wishes
